How conscious are you about the important areas that make up your life?
Do you know the important areas of your life?
One thing I've learned from chatting with many clients is that people often have trouble knowing where to start with their finances and this often leads to procrastination, overwhelm and more of the same.
I've also learnt that sometimes it's not about the money, it's something else.
What if money isn’t the real problem? What if it’s a lack of consciousness? and what if there was a way to interrupt this pattern of unconscious living and find more balance and direction in your life?
Creating Change
To create any type of change, we need to develop awareness, to know where we are now and also know where we want to go. Imagine you want to travel from point A to point B using a GPS system or Google Maps, if you don't type in a current address or desired location then the GPS won't know where to take you.
In this blog, we are going to look at the wheel of life and help you identify the most important areas in need of a level up, discover where you are running on auto pilot and decide which areas you are willing to transform to achieve your goals.
Bonus
At the end of this blog there is a bonus financial wheel of life exercise to help you dig deeper into some of the subcategories that make up your money and financial life, this is a financial coaching blog after all.
Waking up
To start living consciously and change the status quo, we need to stop listening to the thoughts and stories running round in our heads. Ruminating and worrying about our problems will keep us stuck in unconscious living.
Say your goal is to become financially independent, start your own business or take on a new role, to create financial freedom for your future self. To do so might require you to spend more time at work to the exclusion of your family, your health and relationships.
If you'd started off down this path and only realised 5 years in, it may not be how you imagined it to be, you might be feeling off balance, or you may feel caught up in the rat race. We looked at how we can reverse engineer this thinking with the BE, DO, HAVE, model.
The Wheel of Life
Many people experience a feeling of imbalance in their lives, this exercise is a great way to visually highlight where the imbalance could be and help you get clear on where change is needed.
By consciously choosing to improve certain areas of your life, you will gain clarity, start to make meaningful change right now, so you arrive at your desired goal with energy left in the tank and balance in your life, it will also keep you focused as the inevitable obstacles and challenges come up.

To complete the exercise, take a pen and mark a point in each category of the wheel, imagining the centre point is zero and the outer edges is 10. With zero being there is no success in this area and 10 being you're crushing it. For instance, you might be employed, have a partner/single are beginning to accumulate material possessions and consumer debt, spending too much money on socialising and enjoying yourself, whilst your financial goals of home ownership, building a business, investing, and planning aren’t on your radar or are slipping away. Or you might have children, a large mortgage, consumer debt, school fees and your desires of working part time, planning for your retirement just aren’t happening and you are becoming frustrated, your health and family life might also be taking a back seat.
Or it could be something else. Categories for the wheel could be; Business and Career Finances Health Physical environment Family Relationships Personal Growth Social life You can also add in any of your own categories. When doing this exercise, you will need to be 100% honest with yourself around where you are and where you want to improve. Be compassionate with yourself as you step through this and remember it's ok to be exactly where you are right now, you are doing the work and shining a light on where to focus your attention and energy to start moving towards the results you want. Once you've completed the exercise take a few minutes to imagine what your life would look like? How would you feel? What would be different and what would others notice that is different about you?
Bonus
As a bonus here's the financial wheel of life exercise. You can use this to dig deeper into the areas of money and finance.
