Living according to your values sounds simple, but many people struggle to connect what they believe with how they actually live. Understanding your values as ideas is one thing — embodying those values in real, everyday experiences is another. This gap between who you are and how you live often creates frustration, confusion, or a sense of being stuck.

Experiential values are the missing link. They show you how your core values come alive in daily life, helping you create alignment, authenticity, and a deeper sense of purpose and meaning.

If you prefer to explore this topic through video, here’s an episode that pairs with this theme.

Exploring experiential values through both reflection and lived experience is one of the most powerful ways to begin truly living your values in a grounded, sustainable way.

What Are Experiential Values?

Think of your core or meta-value as a destination on a map — a meaningful goal or principle that guides your life. Experiential values are the paths you take to reach that destination. They are the specific feelings, actions, and moments that bring your values to life.

For example:

  • If your meta-value is growth, you might experience it through learning new skills, facing challenges, expressing creativity, or contributing to others.

  • If your meta-value is love, you might experience it through deep connection, being fully present, physical touch, or spending quality time with others.

  • If your meta-value is purpose, you might experience it through service, leadership, or engaging in meaningful work.

Understanding both the big value and the way you experience it clarifies your choices. Instead of chasing vague ideas, you start creating real moments that satisfy your deeper needs.

Why Experiential Values Matter

Experiential values explain many aspects of your life that might otherwise seem confusing.

  • Why certain activities energise you while others drain you

  • Why you feel drawn to some people and not others

  • Why you repeat certain patterns, even if they don’t always serve you

  • Why you feel fulfilled in some areas but stuck in others

They reveal the texture of your values — the unique way you experience meaning. This texture is personal and specific. For example, two people might both value connection, but one feels it through shared experiences, while the other feels it through words of affirmation.

Once you understand this texture, you can design your life around it. You can choose relationships, work, and habits that align with how you truly experience your values.

Experiential values help bridge the gap between abstract ideas and lived reality. They support authenticity and growth, emotional alignment, and a deeper sense of purpose and meaning.

How to Identify Your Experiential Values

Discovering your experiential values requires reflection and attention to your daily life. Here are some practical steps:

  • Notice what energises you. Pay attention to moments when you feel alive, engaged, or deeply satisfied. What are you doing? Who are you with? What feelings arise?

  • Observe what drains you. Identify situations or activities that leave you feeling tired, frustrated, or disconnected. These often signal a mismatch with your experiential values.

  • Reflect on repeated patterns. Look at your habits, relationships, and choices. What themes keep showing up? These patterns often point to how you experience your core values.

  • Ask yourself how you feel love, growth, or purpose. Instead of thinking about what these values mean in theory, focus on how you experience them physically, emotionally, or mentally.

For example, someone might realise that their value of growth feels most alive when they face challenges rather than when they simply consume information. Another person might discover that love feels most real through shared activities rather than verbal expressions.

A Personal Example of Experiential Values in Action

In one moment of clarity, I realised that I experience the value of love primarily through connection. Not through gifts or words, but through being truly present with someone. This insight changed how I approached my relationships. Instead of trying to express love through grand gestures or compliments, I focused on creating moments of genuine presence and shared experience.

This shift brought deeper satisfaction and stronger bonds. It also helped me recognize when I was giving or receiving love in ways that didn’t resonate with me, which reduced frustration and misunderstandings.

Bringing Experiential Values Into Your Daily Life

Once you identify your experiential values, the next step is to embody them consistently. Here are some ways to do that:

  • Create rituals that reflect your values. If connection is your experiential value for love, schedule regular times to be fully present with loved ones without distractions.

  • Choose activities that energise your values. If growth feels like challenge and creativity, seek projects that stretch your skills and allow for innovation.

  • Set boundaries around what drains your values. If certain social settings or tasks leave you depleted, limit your exposure or find ways to adjust them.

  • Communicate your experiential values to others. Sharing how you experience your values can improve relationships and help others support you better.

  • Reflect regularly on your experiences. Journaling or mindfulness can help you stay aware of how your values show up and evolve.

The Impact of Living Your Experiential Values

When you understand how you experience your values, you naturally move toward values‑led living. This is the foundation of how to live your values in a way that feels real, sustainable, and aligned with who you are. This alignment leads to:

  • Greater energy and motivation

  • Stronger, more authentic relationships

  • Clearer decision-making

  • Reduced inner conflict and frustration

  • A deeper sense of fulfillment and purpose

Experiential values act as a compass, guiding you through everyday choices with clarity and confidence.
